Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is an evidence-based, time-limited treatment that helps adolescents improve their mood by strengthening their relationships and communication patterns. Research shows that emotional well-being is deeply connected to our connections with others. IPT focuses on the idea that when relationships improve, symptoms often improve as well.
IPT is structured and collaborative. Across the course of treatment, typically 12–16 sessions, clients and their therapist work together to identify one or two key interpersonal problems that are contributing to distress. These often fall into four areas:
- Grief or complicated bereavement
Navigating the loss of an important relationship. - Role transitions
Adjusting to life changes such as starting high school or college, divorce, breakups, coming-out, launching, or shifts in family roles. - Interpersonal disputes
Reducing conflict and improving communication in challenging relationships. - Interpersonal sensitivity or deficits
Building skills and confidence in creating and maintaining healthy relationships.
IPT is active and practical. Clients learn communication strategies, experiment with new behaviors, and gain clarity about their relational patterns. The therapist offers guidance, support, and gentle challenge, while always keeping the focus on real-world interactions that can create meaningful change.
At Capital Youth Services, IPT is offered as a stand-alone treatment and as an add-on to other evidence-based therapies such as DBT and CBT. It is especially effective for depression, anxiety related to interpersonal stress, and mood difficulties arising during major life transitions. Our clinicians trained directly with IPT’s creator, Dr. Scott Stuart, ensuring a high level of fidelity, competence, and readiness to apply the model with adolescents, young adults, and families.
IPT gives clients a pathway to feel better by improving the relationships that matter most, strengthening support, reducing conflict, and helping young people move through life with greater confidence and connection.
