SPACE Parent Coaching for Child and Teen Anxiety

When a child is struggling with anxiety or OCD, parents often find themselves pulled into patterns that make sense in the moment but gradually keep the problem going. Reassurance, avoiding triggers, stepping in too quickly, changing routines, or helping a child escape distress can bring short-term relief, but over time they may strengthen anxiety.

At Capital Youth Services, we offer SPACE, which stands for Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions. SPACE is a research-supported, parent-based treatment that helps parents learn how to respond to anxiety in ways that are both deeply caring and more effective. Rather than asking parents to become harsh or detached, SPACE teaches a different path: how to be supportive without reinforcing avoidance.

This approach can be especially helpful for children and teens with:

  • generalized anxiety
  • separation anxiety
  • social anxiety
  • school-related anxiety
  • fears and phobias
  • panic symptoms
  • OCD-related patterns
  • anxiety that shows up as dependence, shutdown, or family conflict

One of the strengths of SPACE is that parents can begin making meaningful changes even when a child is resistant to treatment, unwilling to attend therapy, or not yet ready to engage fully. Treatment focuses on what parents can change in their own responses, because shifts in the family system can reduce anxiety and improve functioning.

Our team has been trained in SPACE by Dr. Eli Lebowitz, the developer of the model. We help parents understand how anxiety operates, identify patterns of accommodation, and make changes gradually, thoughtfully, and compassionately.

If your child’s anxiety is taking over family life, SPACE offers a practical and hopeful framework for helping things change.
